Is the flashbacks in american x history, black and white for a significant reason or just what?

I watched american x history the other day, and i was wondering why the flashbacks in the movie where black and white, but towards the end theres one last flashback of them at the beach as little kids but it wasnt in black and white. So is there a significant reason those flashbacks where black and white or is it just to make the movie look cook?
